What is PRP?
PRP, shortened for platelet rich plasma, is a procedure where our expert provider draws your blood spins it very specifically in a centrifuge to extract the healing factors from your blood and immediately inject them back into your skin and tissue.
As the cells grow, the skin thickens, new vessels are formed and the entire area treated is replenished and revitalized. PRP is special because it contains hundreds of proteins called growth factors that are essential in healing injuries and tissue repairing.
Has PRP been studied?
The use of PRP has been documented in many fields. It was first promoted b y M. Ferrari in 1987 following an open heart surgery. Today PRP is used in a range of fields including orthopedics, dentistry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, urology, wound healing, cosmetic, cardiothoracic and maxillofacial surgery. At our Salt Lake Clinic we use PRP for sexual function in women, sexual performance in men, hair loss, and facial cosmetic treatments.
Studies have shown that platelets contain numerous growth factors and cytokines that can reduce inflammation, post procedural blood loss, infection, as well as improve osteogenesis, wound healing and soft tissue healing. It is also evident that platelets release bioactive proteins responsible for attracting macrophages, which are cells that promote removal of degenerated and dead tissue and enhance tissue regeneration.
What do platelets do?
Platelets release growth factors which regulate the healing cascade by signaling to surrounding cells to repair damaged tissue and regenerate new tissue. There are so many different growth factors in our blood. The key growth factors involved in this process include but are not limited to:
